Reading Time Calculator

Estimate how long a reading, article, chapter, or set of notes may take, with an optional buffer for rereading or note-taking.

Estimate reading time

Planning estimate 9m
Base reading time 8m
Buffer added 1m

At 225 words per minute, 1,800 words takes about 8m. With a 10% review buffer, plan for about 9m.

Formula

The base estimate divides word count by reading speed. The buffered estimate adds extra time for notes, rereading, unfamiliar material, or comprehension checks.

Reading time = word count / words per minute

Example interpretation

A 1,800-word reading at 225 words per minute takes about 8 minutes at base speed. With a 10% review buffer, the planning estimate becomes about 9 minutes. For dense academic reading, a larger buffer may be more realistic than simply increasing your speed.

Limitations

  • Dense academic writing, formulas, unfamiliar vocabulary, and note-taking can make reading slower.
  • The calculator estimates time from word count only; it does not measure comprehension.
  • For assignment planning, combine this with deadline and study-time calculators.

FAQ

What reading speed should I use?

A common starting point is 200 to 250 words per minute, but dense study material may be slower.

Why add a review buffer?

A buffer makes the estimate more useful for planning because real reading often includes notes, pauses, or rereading.

Does this measure comprehension?

No. It estimates time from word count and speed. Understanding the text still depends on difficulty and focus.
